Construction halted on the Public Maritime Domain in Dakar

Ousmane Sonko , Prime Minister of Senegal, made an important decision this Tuesday, May 14th, by issuing a decree. This document orders the Directorate of Land Use Monitoring and Control (DSCOS) to suspend all construction and other work on former areas of the Public Maritime Domain (DPM) in the Dakar region. This suspension will be effective for a period of two months, starting May 13, 2024.

This initiative follows the creation of a special commission whose mission is to control and verify the titles and occupations on the old and new dependencies of the DPM of Dakar.

This commission, under the authority of the Prime Minister's office, will be tasked with verifying the legality and compliance of the land titles issued and the occupations in the areas concerned. It will include representatives of the main institutions of the Republic, such as the National Assembly and the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE), as well as members of the government and other individuals involved in land issues.

Land issues remain a major concern for successive governments in Senegal, due to the numerous social conflicts they generate. For years, a large part of Dakar's population has complained about the appropriation of the coastline by private individuals, leading to the privatization of land and restricted access to the sea for many.

Furthermore, the Senegalese government is counting on the civic responsibility of all stakeholders in the sheep sector to ensure an adequate supply of sheep for the Tabaski festival at affordable prices. This was stated by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko at the opening of an inter-ministerial council meeting dedicated to preparations for the upcoming Tabaski festival. The estimated need for 810,000 sheep for Tabaski 2024 is [amount missing].
